Hadith 1565

1565. Commentary: This matter is agreed upon by consensus. The Banu Umayyah, during their era, placed the sermon before the prayer, but this royal decree ended with the conclusion of their rule. The permanence belongs only to the Sunnah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Previously, it has been mentioned in the hadith that the practice of delivering the sermon before the Eid prayer was initiated by Marwan bin Hakam. When Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu objected to him, he replied that people do not sit to listen to our sermon, so I have placed it before the prayer.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-'Eidayn, Hadith: 958)
In another hadith, it is stated that Marwan was the first to arrange for the sermon before the prayer. On one occasion, a person said to him that the prayer should be held before the sermon.
Marwan replied that this method has now been abandoned.
Upon this, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu said:
Indeed, this person has fulfilled his responsibility.
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Iqamat al-Salawat, Hadith: 1275)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has proven from both of these aforementioned ahadith that the Eid prayer precedes the sermon.
This Sunnah cannot be changed due to changing circumstances.
(2)
Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi rahimahullah writes in the explanation of the chapter headings of Bukhari that delivering the sermon after the Eid prayer is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the consistent practice of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
To deliver the sermon before the Eid prayer by analogy with Jumu'ah is an innovation (bid'ah).
Its initiation was from Marwan.
All praise is due to Allah, now this innovation has reached its end.

Hadith Commentary:
It does not emerge from the hadiths of the chapter whether going to the Eid prayer on a mount or on foot is specified; however, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah deduced from the absence of any prohibition regarding going on a mount that going by mount is also not forbidden, although going on foot is more virtuous.

Shafi’i said: It has reached us from Zuhri that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never went to Eid or a funeral on a mount, and Tirmidhi narrated from Ali radi Allahu anhu that going to the Eid prayer on foot is Sunnah.

(Wahidi)

In the narrations of this chapter, there is neither mention of walking on foot nor prohibition of going by mount, from which Imam Bukhari rahimahullah indicated that both ways of going to the Eid ground are permissible, although walking on foot is Sunnah and there is greater reward in it, because for every footprint on the earth, ten rewards are given in return. However, if someone is excused or the Eid ground is far, then using a mount is also permissible.

Some commentators have established the permissibility of riding from the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam reclining on Bilal radi Allahu anhu.

And Allah knows best.

But a Companion of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had prevented him from inventing this innovation (bid‘ah), radi Allahu anhu wa ardaah.

Takhrij:
«أخرجه البخاري، العيدين، باب الخطبة بعد العيد، حديث:963، ومسلم، صلاة العيدين، حديث:888.»©Explanation:
From this hadith, it is understood that on the two Eids, the prayer should be performed first and the sermon delivered afterwards.
During the era of Banu Umayyah, Marwan ibn Hakam was the first ruler who initiated the practice of delivering the sermon before the prayer.
At that very time, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu objected to this and openly stated that you have acted contrary to the Sunnah.
