Hadith 1562

´It was narrated from Tha'labah bin Zahdam that:` 'Ali appointed Abu Mas'ud over the people, then went out on the day of 'Eid and said: 'O people, it is not part of the sunnah to pray before the imam.'"

1562. Commentary: Such words from a Companion are considered to have the status of a marfu‘ narration (i.e., the statement or action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Performing supererogatory prayers (nawafil) before the ‘Eid prayer is prohibited because this is contrary to the practice of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the Companions. However, after the ‘Eid prayer, it is permissible to return home and perform supererogatory prayers, because it is transmitted from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he performed two units of prayer (rak‘at) at home after the ‘Eid prayer.
