Hadith 1545

´Abu Hurairah said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was camping between Dajnan and 'Usfan, besieging the idolaters. The idolaters said: 'These people have a prayer that is dearer to them than their sons and daughters. Plan it, then strike them with a single heavy blow.' Jibril, peace be upon him, came and told the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to divide his companions into two groups, then lead one group in prayer while the others faced the enemy, on guard and with weapons at the ready. So he led them in praying one rak'ah, then they moved back and the others moved forward, and he led them in praying on rak'ah, so that each one of them had prayed one rak'ah with the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) had prayed two rak'ahs."

1545. Commentary: The apparent meaning of the words is that both groups sufficed with only one rak‘ah each. However, there is also the possibility that they performed the second rak‘ah on their own, because the words of the hadith, “with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,” indicate this. The commentator of Sunan al-Nasa’i, Shaykh al-‘Atyubi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in his commentary Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba, has considered the first opinion to be stronger. And Allah knows best. Explanation:

1:
This is a reference to the verse: ﴿And when you (O Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand (in prayer) with you and let them take their arms﴾ (an-Nisa: 102).

1544. Commentary:

➊ This is another form of the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf). This will be practicable when the fear is not intense, because at the beginning of the prayer everyone was together, and at the end of the prayer everyone was together as well. In fact, at the end, there was no one left facing the enemy; all were behind you. One group was completing the remaining units (rak‘at) of their prayer, and the others were simply sitting behind you. All gave the salutation (salam) at the same time.

➋ Najd refers to a highland region, and it existed in several areas, for example: Najd of Hijaz, Najd of Iraq, and Najd of Yemen. In the above hadith, Najd refers to Najd of Hijaz. And in the hadith containing the supplication (against Najd), it refers to Najd of Iraq. This is known from contextual clues and other ahadith.
