Hadith 149

´It was narrated that Abu Hazim said:` "I was behind Abu Hurairah when he performed Wudu' for Salah. He washed his hand up to the armpit, and I said: 'O Abu Hurairah! What is this Wudu'?' He said to me: 'O Banu Farrukh! You are here! If I had known that you were here I would not have performed Wudu' like this. I heard my close friend (i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)) says: "The jewelry of the believer will reach as far as his Wudu reached."

Brief Explanation
1؎: Farukh was the name of a son of Ibrahim (alayhis salam) who was born after Isma'il and Ishaq (alayhima as-salam). His progeny multiplied greatly; it is said that the non-Arabs (Ajam) are from his descendants. Qadi Iyad says that by Farukh, Abu Hurairah means the mawali (clients/freed slaves), and this address is directed towards Abu Hazim.

2؎: From this it is understood that such actions should not be done in front of the common people, because there is a fear that they may begin to consider it obligatory (fard). For this reason, Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) said that if I had known you people were present here, I would not have performed ablution (wudu) in this manner.

3؎: From this it is understood that on the Day of Resurrection, the limbs of ablution (wudu) of the believer will be adorned with jewelry. So whoever performs ablution perfectly, his adornment will also be perfect. Some people have said that what is meant is that on the Day of Resurrection, a Muslim will be adorned with jewelry up to the extent that water reaches in ablution: that is, jewelry on the hands up to the elbows, on the feet up to the ankles, and on the face up to the ears.
Explanation & Benefits

149. Commentary:

➊ Here, "jewelry" refers to actual jewelry. Some have said that "jewelry" here means the light (nur) that will be granted to the individuals of this ummah on the Day of Resurrection as a distinguishing mark, that is, their faces and hands and feet will shine with light. It is by this that they will be recognized.

➋ The washing of the arms up to the armpits by Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu was his own ijtihad (independent reasoning), and he also mentioned the reason for this ijtihad. Because if this act were Sunnah, then certainly there would have been no reason for his displeasure; that is why he said: "If I had known that you were here, I would never have performed this ablution (wudu)." Therefore, the best ablution is that which has actually been transmitted from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in various hadiths, and it is recommended to suffice with that.

➌ Farukh is the name of one of the sons of Ibrahim alayhis salam, whose descendants are mostly non-Arabs (‘ajam). Thus, by "Banu Farukh" is meant non-Arabs.
