Hadith 1489

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِذَا خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ فَصَلُّوا كَأَحْدَثِ صَلَاةٍ صَلَّيْتُمُوهَا " .
´It was narrated from An-Nu'man bin Bashir that :` The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If there is an eclipse of the sun or the moon, pray like the last obligatory prayer you did before that."

1193. Commentary:
It is established from authentic ahadith that this prayer consists of only two rak‘ahs, but in each rak‘ah there should be at least two bowings (ruku‘), and the recitation should be lengthy. See: previous ahadith regarding the eclipse.

1490. Commentary: Like our regular prayer, this also included bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud). It was not comprised of standing (qiyam) alone, nor was it that you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, performed it in the manner of the eclipse prayer (salat al-kusuf). This narration does not discuss the number of bowings (ruku‘).
