Hadith 1441

´It was narrated that 'Umar said:` "The prayer for jumu'ah is two rak'ahs, and for Al-Fitr is two rak'ahs, and for An-Nahr is two rak'ahs, and for traveling is two rak'ahs, complete and not shortened, on the tongue of the Prophet (ﷺ)."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1441. Commentary: “No deficiency or shortcoming” means that these prayers are complete, because they have been prescribed in this number by Allah Himself. Similarly, in travel, two rak‘ahs are not less in reward than four rak‘ahs, because this concession (rukhsa) is also from Allah Himself.

1421. Commentary:

➊ The prayer of travel (safar ki namaz) is included with these other prayers because, if these are also prayers of four units (rak‘ah), then in travel they are performed as two units, except for the Maghrib prayer. The Maghrib prayer remains three units, whether in travel or at home, whereas the other mentioned prayers are inherently two units.

➋ Regarding the aforementioned narration, Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah states that ‘Abdur-Rahman ibn Abi Layla did not hear this, or any narration, from ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu. The verifying scholars (‘ulama’ muhaqqiqin) have written concerning this that the mentioned narration is also transmitted through other chains and routes, and these routes have been declared authentic by the verifying scholars. Therefore, despite the aforementioned narration being disconnected (munqati‘), it is authentic due to other supporting evidences and corroborations. And Allah knows best. 1567. Commentary: This issue is also agreed upon; there is no difference of opinion in it. However, the majority of scholars, in light of the reports from the Companions (athar al-sahabah), state that a traveler may, if he wishes, perform the full prayer, that is, four rak‘ahs. However, since the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) always performed two rak‘ahs for the prayer during travel, therefore, performing the shortened prayer (qasr) is superior.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ In the prayers of Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha, there are four obligatory (fard) units (rak‘ahs), but in travel (safar), a concession (takhfif) has been granted. Now, during travel, it is sufficient to perform only two units instead of four.

➋ Performing the shortened prayer (qasr) does not decrease the reward. Rather, the reward of four units is granted.

➌ The Friday (Jumu‘ah) prayer is performed at the time of Dhuhr. However, in this, only two units are obligatory instead of four.
