Hadith 1435

´It was narrated from Umayyah bin 'Abdullah bin Khalid that:` He said to 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: "We find (mention of) prayer when one is at home (i.e., not traveling) and prayer at times of fear in the Qur'an, but we do not find any mention in the Qur'an of prayer when traveling. Ibn Umar said to him: 'O son of my brother, Allah (SWT) send Muhammad (ﷺ) to us when we did not know anything, and all we should do is to do that which we saw Muhammad (ﷺ) doing.'"

Brief Explanation
1؎: Regarding the Qur'an, the general commands that have been mentioned pertain to this very prayer of residence (hadr).
2؎: The mention of the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf) is in the noble verse: «وإذا ضربتم في الأرض فليس عليكم جناح أن تقصروا» (al-Nisa: 101).
3؎: And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also shortened the prayer (qasr) without the presence of fear, therefore this is such a proof by which the ruling is established in the same manner as it is established from the Qur'an.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1435. Commentary: We also accept the Noble Qur’an only on the affirmation of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); therefore, the real authority lies with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Whatever he declares is binding upon us, whether it is found in the Noble Qur’an or not. The method of performing prayer (salah) is not mentioned in the Noble Qur’an, nor is the number of prayers and similar details specified. When we accept these matters despite their absence from the Noble Qur’an, then we should also accept the shortening of prayer during travel (qasr al-safar), because this too is explicitly established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), both in word and in deed. Further details have already been discussed previously.
