´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:` The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever catches up with a rak'ah of Jumu'ah prayer has caught up with it."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1426. Commentary:
➊ From the meaning of this narration, it is understood that if a person catches less than one rak‘ah, i.e., he joins during the prostration (sujud) or the tashahhud, then he should perform the Zuhr prayer instead of the Jumu‘ah prayer. The majority of the scholars, i.e., Imam Malik, Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, Imam Ishaq, and even among the Hanafis, Imam Muhammad rahimahullah, hold this view. This is also found from the Companions (radi Allahu anhum). However, Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah is of the opinion that whenever one joins before the salam, he should perform Jumu‘ah, because there is a hadith: «ما أدرَكْتُمْ فصلُّوا ، وما فاتَكُم فاقْضوا». However, this hadith is not specific to Jumu‘ah, whereas the narration of the chapter is specific to Jumu‘ah. When there is a conflict between a general and a specific evidence, the specific evidence is given preference.
➋ “He caught the Jumu‘ah,” meaning if he catches one rak‘ah, then his Jumu‘ah is valid. In one narration of Sunan Ibn Majah, this is explicitly stated.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Whoever, for any reason, is unable to reach the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah) on time, but manages to join one rak‘ah with the imam, his prayer will be counted as the Friday prayer. Therefore, he should only complete one more rak‘ah and then conclude with salam.
➋ This indicates that if he joins for less than one rak‘ah, his Friday prayer is not valid; in that case, he should perform the four rak‘ahs of the Zuhr prayer.

In the Case of Missing the Friday Prayer: Performing the Zuhr Prayer
……… Question ………
If a person misses the Friday (Jumu‘ah) prayer, should he perform the Friday prayer or the Zuhr (noon) prayer?
……… The Answer ………
He should perform the Zuhr prayer.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«مَنْ أَدْرَكَ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَةً فَلْيَصِلْ إِلَيْهَا أُخْرَي»
Whoever catches one rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah should add to it the second and last rak‘ah.
In another narration:
«مَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَهَا وَلْيُضِفْ إِلَيْهَا أُخْرَي»
Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Friday prayer on the day of Jumu‘ah has caught the Jumu‘ah, and he should add to it the second rak‘ah.
The narrator of this hadith, Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma, says:
«مَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَهَا، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ يَقْضِيْ مَا فَاتَهُ»
Whoever catches one rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah has caught the Jumu‘ah, and he should make up the missed (one rak‘ah).
This is also the view established from Imam al-Zuhri rahimahullah, and he considered it “wa hiya al-sunnah” (and this is the Sunnah). [
Imam Malik rahimahullah says: I found the scholars of my city (al-Madinah al-Tayyibah) upon this view. [
And this is also the view of ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, Salim ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, Nafi‘ ibn ‘Umar, and others. See: [مصنف ابن ابي شيبه ج 2 ص 129، 130] and elsewhere.
From these evidences and reports, it is established that whoever does not catch even one rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah will not pray two rak‘ahs; therefore, in such a case, he will pray four rak‘ahs.
In contrast to these evidences and reports, it is narrated from Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that:
“Whoever misses the Jumu‘ah should pray two rak‘ahs. This is the Sunnah of Abu al-Qasim sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
The chain of this narration is weak.
Muhammad ibn Nuh ibn Muhammad is mentioned in Akhbar Asbahan and Tabaqat Abi Shaykh (vol. 3, p. 115), but his reliability is not known.
The identification of Ahmad ibn al-Husayn and Muhammad ibn Ja‘far is also required.
……… Question ………
If a person joins the Imam on the day of Jumu‘ah while the Imam is in the tashahhud, and he joins the congregation, should he perform two (2) rak‘ahs or four (4) rak‘ahs after the Imam gives salam?
……… The Answer ………
This person should perform four rak‘ahs of Zuhr.
Upon this, Imam Ibn al-Mundhir al-Naysaburi has transmitted consensus (ijma‘). [
