Hadith 1382

´It was narrated from Aws bin Aws that:` The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever washes (Ghassala) and performs Ghusl, comes early to the Masjid and sits near the Imam, and does not engage in idle talk, he will have for every step he takes (the reward of) a year's worth of good deeds, fasting it and praying Qiyam during it."

1382. Commentary:

➊ The reward mentioned in the hadith is not solely due to the ritual bath (ghusl), but rather for several actions. However, since the ritual bath (ghusl) is also included among these actions, it too has a share in this virtue.

➋ "Washed his head or clothes"—this is the translation of the Arabic word «غسل». Some people have interpreted it to mean that he should also cause his wife to perform the ritual bath (ghusl), i.e., have intercourse with her so that she too will perform the ritual bath (ghusl). However, in our view, the first meaning is more correct. And Allah knows best.

➌ "Idle activities," for example: talking unnecessarily, playing with threads from clothes, mats, or carpets, etc.

➍ "Fasting and standing in prayer for a year"—that is, fasting during the day and standing in prayer throughout the night, continuously, without ever missing a day or showing any laziness. This is such a difficult task that no human being can accomplish it. Yet, the one who performs the aforementioned deeds will be deemed deserving of this tremendous reward.

345. Commentary:
This hadith is also found in Jami' al-Tirmidhi [496] and Sunan Ibn Majah [1087]. Imam al-Tirmidhi rahimahullah has graded it as "hasan." Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has graded it as "sahih." [صحيح أبوداود، حديث : 333]

In the commentaries of the hadith, it is mentioned that in the words of this hadith «غَسّلَ واغتسل», the word «غسل» has been recited both with the light and the stressed pronunciation of the letter "seen." And several meanings have been mentioned for it.

➊ One is the emphatic meaning which the author has adopted.

➋ The second is that a person may have first used khatmi (a cleansing herb), soap, or shampoo, etc., and then poured water (i.e., performed ritual bath [ghusl]).

➌ The third is that someone who has had intercourse with his wife and thus ritual bath (ghusl) has become obligatory upon him. And the wisdom in this is that in this way, a person becomes very calm both physically and emotionally, his mind does not remain disturbed, and he remains focused in worship. «والله أعلم»

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of (ghusl – wa-ghtasala) has also been explained as washing the head and bathing, that is, performing the ritual bath (ghusl) with care and attaining complete cleanliness. The second meaning, according to which the translation has been done, is that one fulfills the conjugal right of his wife, the benefit of which is that on the way to Jumu‘ah, his gaze will not fall in an unlawful manner.

➋ If the mosque is far, it is permissible to come riding (on a mount/vehicle). However, walking to the mosque brings greater reward.

➌ Just as the reward for the front rows in congregational prayer is greater, likewise, sitting close to the imam to listen to the sermon (khutbah) is more virtuous. For this, one will have to come early to the mosque, which in itself is a good deed, and as a result, one will find a place in the front rows.

➍ Along with the Friday prayer, the sermon (khutbah) also holds great importance. Therefore, the sermon should be listened to with full attention. Being engaged in conversation or turning one’s attention to something else during the sermon is contrary to the purpose of the sermon.

➎ Even a small deed, if done with sincerity and in accordance with the Sunnah, brings a great reward.

➏ To forgo such a tremendous reward due to a little laziness is a great deprivation.
