Hadith 1370

´It was narrated from Abu Al-Ja'd Ad-Damri-who was a Companion of the Prophet (ﷺ)- that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` "Whoever missed three jumu'ahs out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1370. Commentary:

➊ "Sealing" is an idiom which means to make something certain and irrevocable. The meaning of the hadith is that a person who, without a valid Shari'ah excuse, misses three consecutive Fridays is definitely a hypocrite. There is no doubt about this. (Except if he repents.)

➋ Performing Jumu'ah is obligatory (wajib), because such a severe warning is only given for abandoning an obligation.

➌ Laziness in fulfilling obligatory (wajib) acts is a very grave sin. Persistently abandoning an obligation leads to the deprivation of the ability to do good deeds; veils of heedlessness are cast over a person's heart, and a person no longer recognizes good as good and evil as evil. May Allah protect us from this.

1:
From this it is understood that continuously abandoning Jumu‘ah is a dangerous act;
it can result in a seal being set upon the heart, after which hope for success in the Hereafter comes to an end.

1052. Commentary:
Having a seal set upon the heart is a great misfortune, deprivation, and punishment, whereby a person is deprived of the ability to do good and virtuous deeds. Therefore, a servant should immediately reform himself and repent.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The word (تَھَاوُناً) is related to the word ھَیِّنٌ, which means something trivial and insignificant. A person does not give importance to such a thing. In fulfilling it, he acts with laziness and negligence. Therefore, this word is also translated as "acting lazily."

➋ The sealing of the heart occurs as a punishment for certain sins. As a result, the heart becomes deprived of distinguishing between good and evil. Then, it no longer loves virtue nor hates evil. When the disease of the heart reaches this level, then the hope for guidance becomes very little. A believer should be especially mindful of the prayers, particularly the Friday prayer, to avoid reaching this dangerous stage.
