Hadith 1351

´It was narrated that Zaid bin Thabit said:` "They were commanded to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times, then a man from among the Ansar was told in a dream: 'Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) command you to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times?' He said: 'Yes.' 'Instead of that, say each one twenty-five times, and include the tahlil among them.' The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and told him about that, and he said: 'Do that.'"

1351. Commentary:

➊ A dream is not considered proof because there is no certainty whether it is from Allah, from Satan, or from one’s own thoughts. However, after the confirmation of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), a dream becomes proof because it is now certain that it is from Allah. Therefore, in this case, it is also considered a command of the Messenger.

➋ The general practice of the people is upon the number thirty-three because those narrations are very well-known, whereas the narrations with the number twenty-five are not as widely recognized. Nevertheless, these are also undoubtedly permissible and correct. Similarly, sometimes one should also act upon the narrations with the number ten.

➌ When a Companion says: “We were commanded” or “The people were commanded,” then it is considered as having the status of a marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet) hadith. The majority of hadith scholars hold this view.

Benefits:
The hadith of Jibril [مسلم: 8], the hadith of Abdullah bin Zayd bin Abd Rabbah [سنن ابي داؤد: 499 و اسناده حسن] regarding the adhan, and the aforementioned hadith show that, for the purpose of teaching, angels used to come in human form, and afterwards the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would confirm it (through revelation). As in this hadith as well, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam affirmed the dream after hearing it. Thus, it is understood that saying «سبحان الله» 33 times, «الحمد لله» 33 times, and «الله اكبر» 34 times, as well as saying «سبحان الله» 25 times, «الحمد لله» 25 times, «الله اكبر» 25 times, and «لا الٰه الا الله» 25 times, are both permissible; one may act upon either method. However, it should be clear that in the Shari‘ah, the dreams of anyone other than a prophet are absolutely not a proof, except for those dreams during the Prophetic era which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself confirmed. Apart from this, no legal ruling can be derived from any dream, whereas the foundations of the sects and schools of some people are based solely on dreams, which is clearly false.

Explanation:
1:
There are three narrations in this regard: one is the method mentioned in this hadith (i.e., 33/33/and 34 times); the second method is the one taught by the angel; and the third method is to say Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar 33/33 times, and to complete the count of one hundred, say (La ilaha illallah) once. Whichever method is adopted, all are established; sometimes do this, and sometimes do that.
