Hadith 1346

´'Aishah said:` "A Jewish woman entered unto me and said: 'The torment of the grave is because of urine.' I said: 'You are lying.' She said: 'No, it is true; we cut our skin and clothes because of it.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to pray and our voices became loud. He said: 'What is this?' So I told him what she had said. He said: 'She spoke the truth.' After that day he never offered any prayer but he said, following the prayer: 'Rabba Jibril wa Mika'il wa Israfil, aiding min harrin-nar wa 'adhabil-qabr (Lord of Jibril, Mika'il and Israfil, grant me refuge from the heat of the Fire and the torment of the grave).'"

1346. Commentary:

➊ Not taking precautions against urine splashes is a cause of the punishment of the grave. This matter has also been mentioned in other narrations. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha radi Allahu anha may not have known about it, or this incident is from an earlier time, as is evident from the end of the hadith, where it is mentioned that after this, she always sought refuge from the punishment of the grave.

➋ “They used to cut leather and cloth.” By leather is also meant worn leather, which would get urine on it, not the skin of one’s own body, because urine is discharged from the body itself, and it is inevitable that it touches the body; that is why ablution (istinja) is necessary. If washing there were sufficient, then there would be no need to cut other parts of the body. However, since clothing or leather worn is separate from the body, and for drops of urine to fall on them is a result of a person’s negligence and laziness, therefore, the punishment of cutting them can be given. Some scholars have also taken this to mean the skin of the body, but this is not correct. In any case, this is an unbearable hardship (takleef ma la yutāq), i.e., it is impossible to act upon. In some narrations, the word «جسد» has also appeared. But this is the error (wahm) of Asim ibn Bahdalah, who understood “nasakh” to mean the skin of the body and then replaced it with the word «جسد» (body). Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared “jasad ahadihim” to be munkar (rejected). See: [ضعیف سنن أبي داود (مفصل) للألباني ، رقم الحدیث : 5] (An anomalous (shadh) statement should be interpreted; whether it is anomalous rationally or textually, it is not reliable. ➌ “Lord of Jibril, Mika’il, and Israfil!” The purpose of such words is to express the greatness of the Lord, i.e., the One who created such magnificent creatures. Similarly, “the true Lord of the heavens and the earth,” “the Lord of the West,” and so on.
