Hadith 1321

´It was narrated from Wasi' bin Habban that:` He asked 'Abdullah bin 'Umar about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: "Allahu Akbar" every time he went down and "Allahu Akbar" every time he came up, then he said: "As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah) to his right and: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah) to his left."

1321. Commentary: Just as Islamic law began the prayer with a majestic phrase like "Allahu Akbar," which indicates severing the worshipper from the people and connecting him to Allah Ta'ala, similarly, in contrast, it ended the prayer with a pleasant phrase like «السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ», which reconnects the worshipper with the people in the best manner. This is both an announcement of the end of the prayer and the beginning of conversation with people—and that too in the best way, that is, with supplicatory words. Since it is prohibited to look here and there during the prayer, therefore, turning the head to give salam at the end of the prayer is legislated.
