Hadith 1304

´It was narrated that Mu'adhbin Jabal said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took my hand and said: 'I love you, O Mu'adh!' I said: 'And I love you, O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).' Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Never forget to say in every prayer: Rabbi a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik (My Lord, help me to remember You, give thanks to You and worship You well.)"

1304. Commentary:

➊ It is prescribed to supplicate with these words in the prayer.

➋ In this hadith, the words “in every prayer” («فِي كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ») are mentioned, while in other narrations the words “after every prayer” («في دبُرِ كلِّ صلاةٍ») are found. There is no contradiction between the two narrations; rather, there is flexibility in this matter: a person may recite this supplication after the salutation (salam) as well as before it, because “dubr” can mean both “the end of something” and “after.” And Allah knows best.

➌ The virtue of Mu’adh radi Allahu anhu is established here, that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loved him.

➍ It is also proven from this that if a person loves another, he should inform him of it, as this brings stability and continuity to the love.

➎ A servant should always seek Allah’s help for obedience and submission to Him, because the ability to avoid sin and to do good deeds is not possible without His granting of success (tawfiq).
