Hadith 1261

´It was narrated from Muhammad bin Yusuf, the freed slave of Uthman, from his father Yusuf, that:` Mu'awiyah prayed in front of them, and he stood up during the prayer when he should have sat. The people said tasbih, but he remained standing, then he prostrated twice while he was sitting, after he completed the prayer. Then he sat on the Minbar and said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever forgets something in his prayer, let him prostrate twice like this.'

Brief Explanation
1؎ : Firstly, this hadith is weak in terms of its chain of narration. Secondly, the forgetfulness mentioned in it is not general in nature; rather, what is meant is forgetfulness regarding something other than a pillar (rukn) of the prayer. Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu forgot the first sitting (qa'dah ula), which is not a pillar (rukn). The expiation (kaffarah) for this type of forgetfulness can be the prostration of forgetfulness (sajdah sahw), as will be mentioned in the following hadith.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1261. Commentary: This forgetfulness (sahw) was due to forgetting the tashahhud after two rak‘ahs. In this case, the correct method is that if the imam stands up, then even after hearing «سبحان اللہ», he should not sit back down, but rather continue the prayer. At the end, before the salām, he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujūd as-sahw). This is not the case for every instance of forgetfulness, as has already been explained previously.
