Hadith 1216

´It was narrated that Abu Ad-Darda' said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood praying, and we heard him say: 'I seek refuge with Allah from you.' Then he said: 'I curse you with the curse of Allah (SWT),' three times and stretched out his hand as if to take something. When he finished praying we said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something in your prayer that we have never heard you say before, and we saw you stretch out your hand.' He said: 'The enemy of Allah (SWT), Iblis, came with a brand of fire to throw it in my face, so I said: I seek refuge with Allah from you three times, then I wanted to take hold of him. By Allah (SWT), were it not for the prayer of our brother Sulaiman, he would have been tied up this morning for the children of Al-Madinah to play with him.'"

1216. Commentary:

➊ From this narration, it is understood that sending curses upon Satan and seeking refuge from him—even if done in the form of direct address—does not invalidate the prayer, because the intent is not actual speech but rather cursing, etc. However, if in prayer, actual conversation with the jinn is intended, then the prayer will become invalid.

➋ In reality, Satan wanted to frighten the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but he was unaware of your spiritual strength.

➌ Prophet Sulayman alayhis salam had prayed: “O Allah! Grant me such a kingdom as will not befit anyone after me.” [ص : 35 : 38] One of the characteristics of this kingdom was dominance over the jinn. If the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had captured this jinn and tied him to a pillar, it would have contradicted this exclusivity and the supplication, because Allah Ta’ala had already accepted Sulayman alayhis salam’s prayer.

➍ It is possible that he (the jinn) came in human form, and if you had caught him, he would have remained in the form of a man. Only then could he have been tied up and provided an opportunity for the children to play with him; otherwise, in his original form, this would not have been possible.

➎ It is permissible to tie up a prisoner in the mosque.
