´It was narrated that 'Aishah, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with her, said:` "I knocked at the door when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was offering a voluntary prayer. The door was in the direction of the Qiblah so he took a few steps to his right or left and opened the door, then he went back to where he was praying."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1207. Commentary:
➊ There is some concession in voluntary (nafl) prayer. In any case, the face of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not turn away from the qiblah. Permission is granted to take a few steps. In obligatory (fard) prayer, the coming back of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam moving forward is evidence for this. But remember, this concession is only in case of necessity. Walking without reason will invalidate the prayer.
➋ The researcher of the book has declared this narration weak in its chain, whereas other scholars have, based on supporting evidences, considered it hasan (good), and their opinion appears closer to correctness. And Allah knows best. For further details, see: (Sunan Abi Dawud (Mufassal) by al-Albani: 4/77, Hadith: 855, and al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 42/320, 321)
➌ When there is no one else in the house and the door is in the direction of the qiblah, the one praying may open the door.
