بَابُ التَّشْمِيتِ فِي الْعُطَاسِ
Supplication After Sneezing
Hadith 1760
حَدَّثَنِي مَالِك، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنْ عَطَسَ فَشَمِّتْهُ، ثُمَّ إِنْ عَطَسَ فَشَمِّتْهُ، ثُمَّ إِنْ عَطَسَ فَشَمِّتْهُ، ثُمَّ إِنْ عَطَسَ فَقُلْ : إِنَّكَ مَضْنُوكٌ " . قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ : لَا أَدْرِي أَبَعْدَ الثَّالِثَةِ أَوِ الرَّابِعَةِ
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If someone sneezes, respond to him (that is, when he says 'Alhamdulillah', say 'Yarhamuk Allah'), then if he sneezes again, respond to him, then if he sneezes again, respond to him, then if he sneezes again, say: 'You have caught a cold.'" Abdullah bin Abi Bakr said: I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this after the third time or after the fourth.
Hadith 1761
وَحَدَّثَنِي وَحَدَّثَنِي مَالِك، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ إِذَا عَطَسَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، قَالَ : " يَرْحَمُنَا اللَّهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَيَغْفِرُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ "
It is narrated from Nafi‘ that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) sneezed and someone said «يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ» (may Allah have mercy on you), he would say «يَرْحَمُنَا اللّٰهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ، وَيَغْفِرُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ», (meaning: May Allah have mercy on us and on you, and forgive us and forgive you).
