It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) (who was the second husband of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym, may Allah be pleased with her, who was the mother of Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her): I heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which was not due to anything except hunger, so do you have anything to eat? Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) took out some barley bread, wrapped it in a cloth, and placed it under my arm, and covered me with some cloth, then I brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He was sitting in the mosque and many people were sitting with him. I stood there, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself asked: "Did Abu Talhah send you?" I said: Yes! He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "For food?" I said: Yes! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to all his companions: "All of you get up." So all of them got up and left. I went ahead of everyone and informed Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is coming with people, and we do not have enough food to feed them all. Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) know best. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), until both Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came together. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Umm Sulaym! Bring whatever you have." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) brought those same breads. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had them broken into pieces, then Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) squeezed a small container of ghee over them, and it became a mixture. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said whatever Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, willed. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Call ten people." They called ten people, and they all ate to their fill and left. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Call ten people." They also came, ate to their fill, and left. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Call ten people." They also came, ate to their fill, and left. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Call ten more." Until all who came were seventy (70) or eighty (80) people, and all were satisfied.

There were three hundred men in this army, and I was among them. On the way, the food ran out. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that whatever food remained should be gathered together. When it was all collected, it amounted to two containers of dates. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) would give us a little food from it each day, until it came to the point that only one date would be our share. Then even that finished. Wahb bin Kaysan says: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): What would you do with one date each? He said: When even that was gone, then we realized its value. When we reached the seashore, we found a fish lying there, as large as a mountain. The entire army ate from it for eighteen days and nights. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the bones of the fish be set upright. Two bones were set upright, and a camel passed underneath them without touching them.
