Hadith 1646
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that we went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the expedition of Banu Anmar(1), and we had camped under a tree. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appeared, and I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Come into the shade. So he came and sat down. I went to look at my basket, searching in it, and found a cucumber. I broke it and brought it before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He asked: "Where did this come from?" Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We brought it with us from Madinah. Then Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: There was a man with us whose travel provisions we had arranged; he used to graze our animals. When he turned his back to go graze the animals, he was wrapped in sheets that had become torn and tattered (old). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him and said: "Does he not have other clothes?" Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! He does, they are tied up in a bundle; I have given them to him to wear. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Tell him to wear those clothes." I called him, and he took out the clothes from the bundle and wore them. When he was about to leave again, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What was wrong with him (that he was wearing torn, old sheets when he had clothes available)? May Allah strike his neck; now does he not look good?" The man heard this and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Will my neck be struck in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Yes, in the way of Allah." Then that man was martyred in the way of Allah(2).

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I want to see the scholar wearing good clothes.
