بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي سُكْنَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَالْخُرُوجِ مِنْهَا
Chapter on what is reported regarding living in Madinah and leaving it
Hadith 1595
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مَالِك، عَنْ قَطَنِ بْنِ وَهْبِ بْنِ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ الْأَجْدَعِ ، أَنَّ يُحَنَّسَ مَوْلَى الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ فَأَتَتْهُ مَوْلَاةٌ لَهُ تُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَتْ : إِنِّي أَرَدْتُ الْخُرُوجَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ اشْتَدَّ عَلَيْنَا الزَّمَانُ، فَقَالَ لَهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ : اقْعُدِي لُكَعُ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " لَا يَصْبِرُ عَلَى لَأْوَائِهَا وَشِدَّتِهَا أَحَدٌ، إِلَّا كُنْتُ لَهُ شَفِيعًا أَوْ شَهِيدًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ "
Yahnas, who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), when one of his slave girls came and said: I want to leave Madinah, O Abu Abdur-Rahman! Because there are hardships here. And it was a time of turmoil in Madinah (Yazid bin Muawiyah had troubled the people there and caused tribulation). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sit down, unworthy one! I have heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to say: “Whoever is patient over the hardships and difficulties of Madinah, I will be his witness or intercessor on the Day of Resurrection.”
Hadith 1596
وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مَالِك، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا بَايَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَأَصَابَ الْأَعْرَابِيَّ وَعْكٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَقِلْنِي بَيْعَتِي، فَأَبَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَهُ، فَقَالَ : أَقِلْنِي بَيْعَتِي، فَأَبَى، ثُمَّ جَاءَهُ، فَقَالَ : أَقِلْنِي بَيْعَتِي، فَأَبَى، فَخَرَجَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّمَا " الْمَدِينَةُ كَالْكِيرِ تَنْفِي خَبَثَهَا وَيَنْصَعُ طِيبُهَا "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upon Islam. He began to suffer from fever in Madinah. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Release me from my pledge. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused. He came again and said: Release me from my pledge. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused. He came again and said: Release me from my pledge. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused. He then left Madinah. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Madinah is like a bellows or a furnace; it removes impurities and retains only the pure.
Hadith 1597
وَحَدَّثَنِي مَالِك، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحُبَاب سَعِيدَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " أُمِرْتُ بِقَرْيَةٍ تَأْكُلُ الْقُرَى يَقُولُونَ يَثْرِبُ وَهِيَ الْمَدِينَةُ، تَنْفِي النَّاسَ كَمَا يَنْفِي الْكِيرُ خَبَثَ الْحَدِيدِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to go to a town which will consume other towns. People call it Yathrib, and it is Madinah. It expels evil people just as a furnace removes impurities from iron."
Hadith 1598
وَحَدَّثَنِي مَالِك، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لَا يَخْرُجُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ الْمَدِينَةِ رَغْبَةً عَنْهَا، إِلَّا أَبْدَلَهَا اللَّهُ خَيْرًا مِنْهُ "
It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No person leaves Madinah out of aversion except that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, gives Madinah someone better than him in his place."
Hadith 1599
وَحَدَّثَنِي مَالِك، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " تُفْتَحُ الْيَمَنُ فَيَأْتِي قَوْمٌ يَبُسُّونَ فَيَتَحَمَّلُونَ بِأَهْلِيهِمْ وَمَنْ أَطَاعَهُمْ، وَالْمَدِينَةُ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَتُفْتَحُ الشَّامُ فَيَأْتِي قَوْمٌ يُبِسُّونَ فَيَتَحَمَّلُونَ بِأَهْلِيهِمْ وَمَنْ أَطَاعَهُمْ، وَالْمَدِينَةُ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ، وَتُفْتَحُ الْعِرَاقُ فَيَأْتِي قَوْمٌ يُبِسُّونَ فَيَتَحَمَّلُونَ بِأَهْلِيهِمْ وَمَنْ أَطَاعَهُمْ، وَالْمَدِينَةُ خَيْرٌ لَهُمْ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sufyan bin Abi Zuhair (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Yemen will be conquered, and people will come from there traveling to Madinah, and they will take their families and whoever obeys them away from Madinah, even though Madinah would be better for them, if only they knew. And al-Sham will be conquered, and some people will come from there traveling and will take their families and whoever obeys them away from Madinah, even though Madinah would be better for them, if only they knew. And Iraq will be conquered, and some people will come from there traveling and will take their families and whoever obeys them away from Madinah, even though Madinah would be better for them, if only they knew."
Hadith 1600
وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مَالِك، عَنْ ابْنِ حِمَاسٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لَتُتْرَكَنَّ الْمَدِينَةُ عَلَى أَحْسَنِ مَا كَانَتْ، حَتَّى يَدْخُلَ الْكَلْبُ أَوِ الذِّئْبُ فَيُغَذِّي عَلَى بَعْضِ سَوَارِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَوْ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ "، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَلِمَنْ تَكُونُ الثِّمَارُ ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانَ ؟ قَالَ : " لِلْعَوَافِي : الطَّيْرِ وَالسِّبَاعِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Surely, you will leave Madinah in a good state until a time will come when a dog or a wolf will come and urinate on the pillars of the mosque or on the pulpit." The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Who will eat the fruits of Madinah at that time?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "The hungry animals—birds and beasts."
Hadith 1601
وَحَدَّثَنِي مَالِك أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ حِينَ خَرَجَ مِنْ الْمَدِينَةِ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهَا فَبَكَى، ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَا مُزَاحِمُ " أَتَخْشَى أَنْ نَكُونَ مِمَّنْ نَفَتْ الْمَدِينَةُ "
When Umar bin Abdul Aziz departed from Madinah, he looked towards Madinah and wept, and said to his servant Muzahim: Perhaps you and we are among those whom Madinah has expelled.
