Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was informed that a man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: I gave my wife the right to divorce herself, and she gave herself three divorces. What do you say about this? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The divorce has taken effect. The man said: Do not do this. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What have I done? You did it yourself.

It is narrated from Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say: When a man gives his wife the right to divorce herself, then whenever the woman wishes, she can take the divorce upon herself. However, if the husband denies and says: "I had given the right for only one divorce," and he swears an oath, then he will have the right to her as long as she is in her waiting period (‘iddah).
