Muwatta Imam Malik (Riwayat Yahya)

Whenever Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would take a sacrificial animal (hady) from Madinah, he would garland it (meaning, hang something around its neck), and he would perform ish’ar (cutting the hump on one side so that blood flows) at Dhu’l-Hulayfah. However, he would garland it before performing ish’ar, but both actions would be done at the same place, in such a way that he would turn the face of the hady towards the qiblah, first hang two sandals around its neck, then perform ish’ar on the left side, and would take the hady along with him, remaining with all the people even at ‘Arafah on the day of ‘Arafah. Then, when the people would return, the hady would also return. When he reached Mina in the morning on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr), he would slaughter it before shaving or shortening the hair. And Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would slaughter his hady himself. He would make them stand in rows, turn their faces towards the qiblah, then slaughter them. He would eat from its meat himself and also feed others.

It is narrated from Nafi‘ that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would wound the hump of his sacrificial animal for the purpose of marking (shi‘ar), he would say: In the name of Allah, who is the Greatest.

It is narrated from Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say that Hadi is the animal which has been garlanded and marked, and is made to stand at Arafat.

It is narrated from Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to clothe his camels, which were for Hadi (sacrificial animals), with Egyptian cloth, Charjami, and sets of garments (after the sacrifice), and he would send those clothes to the Sacred Ka‘bah to be draped over it.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, asked Abdullah bin Dinar: What did Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, do with the camel's saddlecloth when the covering of the Noble Ka'bah was made? He said: He used to give it in charity.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say: For sacrifice, the camel should be five years old or older.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) would neither tear the camel saddles nor put them on until they went from Mina to Arafat.

Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair used to say to his sons: O my sons! For the sake of Allah, none of you should give such a camel that you would feel ashamed to give to your friend, because Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, is more generous than all the generous ones and is more deserving that something should be chosen and given for His sake.
