Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: I saw some people of knowledge, when they performed i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan, they would not come to their homes until they had performed the Eid al-Fitr prayer with the Muslims.
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It has reached me in this way from the people of knowledge and virtue who have passed, and this statement is most pleasing to me.
It is narrated from Hazrat Sumi, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, that when Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman would observe i'tikaf, he would go, for the time of necessary need, into a roofed room which remained closed in the house of Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he would not leave the i'tikaf until he attended the Eid with the Muslims.
