بَابُ النَّهْيِ عَنِ الْوِصَالِ فِي الصِّيَامِ
Chapter on Prohibition of Continuous Fasting (Wisal)
Hadith 615
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْوِصَالِ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ ، إِنِّي أُطْعَمُ وَأُسْقَى "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (i.e., fasting day after day without breaking the fast in between). The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You do it? He replied: "I am not like you; I am given food and drink."
Hadith 616
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنْ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْوِصَالَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْوِصَالَ " ، قَالُوا : فَإِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَهَيْئَتِكُمْ ، إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Beware of fasting continuously without breaking." The people said: "Do you do so, O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He replied: "I am not like you; my Lord gives me food and drink during the night."
