بَابُ مَا يَقُولُ الْمُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجَنَازَةِ
What the one praying over the deceased should say
Hadith 535
حَدَّثَنِي حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ كَيْفَ تُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجَنَازَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ : " أَنَا لَعَمْرُ اللَّهِ أُخْبِرُكَ أَتَّبِعُهَا مِنْ أَهْلِهَا ، فَإِذَا وُضِعَتْ كَبَّرْتُ وَحَمِدْتُ اللَّهَ وَصَلَّيْتُ عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ، ثُمَّ أَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ عَبْدُكَ ، وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ ، وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ ، كَانَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ ، وَأَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِي إِحْسَانِهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُسِيئًا فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ ، وَلَا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهُ "
Hazrat Abu Saeed Maqbari asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him: How do you perform the funeral prayer? Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: By Allah, the Everlasting, I will inform you. I am with the funeral from its house, then when it is placed, I say the takbeer and praise Allah, and send blessings upon the Prophet. Then I say: O Allah! Your servant and the son of Your servant and the son of Your maidservant bore witness that there is no true deity except You, and indeed Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is Your servant and Your Messenger, and You know his condition well. O Lord! If he was righteous, then increase his reward, and if he was sinful, then forgive his sins. O Lord! Do not deprive us of his reward, and do not put us to trial after him.
Hadith 536
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، يَقُولُ : صَلَّيْتُ وَرَاءَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَلَى صَبِيٍّ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَطِيئَةً قَطُّ ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ أَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ "
Saeed bin Musayyib used to say: I prayed behind Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) for a boy who was innocent, and I heard him saying: O Allah! Save him from the punishment of the grave.
Hadith 537
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، " أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ لَا يَقْرَأُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْجَنَازَةِ "
It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not recite the Qur'an in the funeral prayer.
