بَابُ الْمَشْيِ أَمَامَ الْجَنَازَةِ
Chapter on walking in front of the funeral procession
Hadith 526
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ " كَانُوا يَمْشُونَ أَمَامَ الْجَنَازَةِ وَالْخُلَفَاءُ هَلُمَّ جَرًّا وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ "
It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, and all the caliphs used to walk in front of the funeral procession, and Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, also used to do so.
Hadith 527
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْهُدَيْرِ ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ " يَقْدُمُ النَّاسَ أَمَامَ الْجَنَازَةِ فِي جَنَازَةِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ "
It is narrated from Rabi'ah bin Abdullah bin Hudair that he saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) walking ahead in the funeral procession of Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her).
Hadith 528
وَحَدَّثَنِي وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، قَالَ : " مَا رَأَيْتُ أَبِي قَطُّ فِي جَنَازَةٍ إِلَّا أَمَامَهَا " قَالَ : " ثُمَّ يَأْتِي الْبَقِيعَ فَيَجْلِسُ حَتَّى يَمُرُّوا عَلَيْهِ "
It is narrated from Hisham bin Urwah that I always saw my father Urwah walking in front of the funeral procession, until he would reach Baqi and sit there, remaining seated until the funeral had passed by.
Hadith 529
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " الْمَشْيُ خَلْفَ الْجَنَازَةِ مِنْ خَطَإِ السُّنَّةِ "
Ibn Shihab said: Walking behind the funeral is a mistake, that is, it is against the Sunnah.
