Hadith 473
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abdul Qari that I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: I heard Hisham bin Hizam reciting Surah Furqan in a manner different from the way I recite it, and it was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who taught me this Surah. I was about to hasten and express anger towards him, but I remained silent until he finished the prayer. Then I took him by his cloak, brought him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah, I heard him reciting Surah Furqan in a manner different from the way you taught me. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Let him go," then said to him: "Recite." So Hisham recited in the same way as I had heard him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said to me: "You recite." So I recited. Then he said: "The Noble Qur'an was revealed upon seven modes, so recite in whichever is easiest for you."
Hadith 474
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who memorizes the Qur'an is like that of a camel owner; as long as he keeps it tied, it remains, but if he lets it loose, it goes away."
Hadith 475
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): How does revelation come to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Sometimes it comes like the ringing of a bell, and that is very hard upon me. Then when it ceases, I remember what has been said. Sometimes the angel comes to me in the form of a man and speaks to me, and I remember what he says." Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When revelation would descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on very cold days, then when it ceased, sweat would be dripping from his forehead.
Hadith 476
It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair, he said: «﴿عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى﴾» was revealed about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him). He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad! Tell me a place near you so that I may sit there. And at that time, a man from among the prominent men of the polytheists (either Ubayy bin Khalaf or Utbah bin Rabi'ah) was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pay attention to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), but rather turned his attention to that man and said: "O father of so-and-so! Is there any fault in what I am saying?" He would say: No, by the idols! There is no fault in what you are saying. Then these verses were revealed: «﴿عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى، أَنْ جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَى﴾» [عبس: 1، 2].
Hadith 477
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aslam Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was traveling at night while riding, and Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about something, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not reply. Then he asked again, but still did not reply. Then he asked again, but still did not reply. At that moment, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to himself: "Would that you had died, O Umar! Three times you have earnestly asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and not once did he reply to you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I made my camel go faster and moved ahead, but in my heart was the fear that perhaps some revelation of Allah's Word would descend concerning me. So after a little while, I stopped, and in the meantime, I heard a caller calling me. At that moment, my fear increased even more that Allah's Word might have been revealed about me. So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and greeted him with salam. Then he replied and said: 'Tonight a surah has been revealed to me which is more beloved to me than all the things of the world.' Then he recited: «﴿إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُبِينًا﴾ [الفتح: 1]».

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "There will emerge among you some people who will consider your prayer insignificant compared to their prayer, and your fasting compared to their fasting, and your deeds compared to their deeds. They will recite the Word of Allah but it will not go below their throats. They will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the hunted animal, cleanly passing through. If one looks at the arrowhead, he will find nothing on it; if he looks at the shaft, he will find nothing on it; if he looks at the feathers, he will find nothing on them; and the one who doubts in the sinew will wonder whether anything has stuck to it or not."
Hadith 479
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was informed that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) spent eight years learning Surah Al-Baqarah.
