بَابُ قَصْرِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي السَّفَرِ
Chapter on shortening prayer during travel
Hadith 333
حَدَّثَنِي حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ خَالِدِ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّا نَجِدُ صَلَاةَ الْخَوْفِ وَصَلَاةَ الْحَضَرِ فِي الْقُرْآنِ وَلَا نَجِدُ صَلَاةَ السَّفَرِ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ : " يَا ابْنَ أَخِي إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَا نَعْلَمُ شَيْئًا فَإِنَّمَا نَفْعَلُ كَمَا رَأَيْنَاهُ يَفْعَلُ "
Hazrat Umayyah bin Abdullah asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we find the prayer of fear and the prayer at home in the Qur'an, but we do not find the prayer of travel in the Qur'an. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied, "O my nephew! Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, sent to us Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) at a time when we knew nothing, so we do as we saw Hazrat Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), doing."
Hadith 334
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : " فُرِضَتِ الصَّلَاةُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فِي الْحَضَرِ وَالسَّفَرِ ، فَأُقِرَّتْ صَلَاةُ السَّفَرِ ، وَزِيدَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْحَضَرِ "
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: Prayers were originally prescribed as two rak'ahs, both in residence and on journey; after that, the prayer during journey remained as it was, and the prayer during residence was increased.
Hadith 335
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : لِسَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَا أَشَدَّ مَا رَأَيْتَ أَبَاكَ أَخَّرَ الْمَغْرِبَ فِي السَّفَرِ ، فَقَالَ سَالِمٌ : " غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَنَحْنُ بِذَاتِ الْجَيْشِ فَصَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ بِالْعَقِيقِ "
Yahya ibn Sa'id said: I asked Salim ibn 'Abdullah, "How much did you see your father delay the Maghrib prayer while traveling?" Salim said: The sun had set and we were at Dhat al-Jaysh, then he performed the Maghrib prayer at 'Aqiq.
