بَابُ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى
The middle prayer
Hadith 312
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي يُونُسَ مَوْلَى عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَمَرَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ أَنْ أَكْتُبَ لَهَا مُصْحَفًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَتْ : إِذَا بَلَغْتَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ فَآذِنِّي حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ سورة البقرة آية 238 ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتُهَا آذَنْتُهَا فَأَمْلَتْ عَلَيَّ : " حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ، وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ " ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Abu Yunus that Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) instructed me to write a document, and said: When you reach this verse «﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ [البقرة: 238]», inform me. So when I reached this verse, I informed her. She said: Write it like this: “«حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ.»” meaning, “Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and the Asr prayer.” Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 313
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ رَافِعٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ مُصْحَفًا لِحَفْصَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، فَقَالَتْ : إِذَا بَلَغْتَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ فَآذِنِّي حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ سورة البقرة آية 238 ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتُهَا آذَنْتُهَا فَأَمْلَتْ عَلَيَّ : " حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ، وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ "
It is narrated from Amr bin Rafi that I used to write the Book of Allah for Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), so she said: When you reach this verse: «﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، وَقُومُوا لِلّٰهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ [البقرة: 238]», inform me. So when I reached this verse, I informed her, and she dictated to me in this way: "«حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ، وَقُومُوا لِلّٰهِ قَانِتِينَ»." That is, "Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly and silently."
Hadith 314
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ ، عَنْ ابْنِ يَرْبُوعٍ الْمَخْزُومِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ ، يَقُولُ : " الصَّلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الظُّهْرِ "
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Saeed that he heard from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The middle prayer (Salat al-Wusta) is the Zuhr prayer.
Hadith 315
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، وَعَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، كَانَا يَقُولَانِ : " الصَّلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ " . ¤ قَالَ مَالِك : وَقَوْلُ عَلِيٍّ ، وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَحَبُّ مَا سَمِعْتُ إِلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was informed that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, both used to say that the middle prayer (Salat al-Wusta) is the Fajr prayer.
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that among all the narrations, the statement of Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, is the one I prefer most.
