بَابُ صَلَاةِ الْإِمَامِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ
Imam leading prayer while sitting
Hadith 303
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَكِبَ فَرَسًا فَصُرِعَ ، فَجُحِشَ شِقُّهُ الْأَيْمَنُ ، فَصَلَّى صَلَاةً مِنَ الصَّلَوَاتِ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ ، وَصَلَّيْنَا وَرَاءَهُ قُعُودًا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ ، فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا ، وَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا ، وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا ، وَإِذَا قَالَ : سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، فَقُولُوا : رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ، وَإِذَا صَلَّى جَالِسًا ، فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا أَجْمَعُونَ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) rode a horse, then fell from it, and his right side was grazed. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the prayer sitting, and we also performed the prayer sitting behind him. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: "The Imam is appointed so that he may be followed. So when the Imam prays standing, you should also pray standing, and when the Imam bows (in ruku‘), you should also bow, and when the Imam raises his head, you should also raise your heads, and when the Imam says «سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ», you should say «رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ», and when the Imam prays sitting, you should also pray sitting."
Hadith 304
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ شَاكٍ ، فَصَلَّى جَالِسًا وَصَلَّى وَرَاءَهُ قَوْمٌ قِيَامًا ، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنِ اجْلِسُوا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ ، فَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا ، وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا ، وَإِذَا صَلَّى جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا "
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer while sitting due to illness, and the people began to pray standing. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to them to sit down. When he finished the prayer, he said: "The Imam is appointed so that he may be followed; therefore, when the Imam bows, you should also bow, and when the Imam raises his head, you should also raise your heads, and when the Imam performs prayer sitting, you should also perform prayer sitting."
Hadith 305
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ فِي مَرَضِهِ فَأَتَى ، فَوَجَدَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَاسْتَأْخَرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ كَمَا أَنْتَ ، فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ ، وَكَانَ النَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out during his illness of death, so he came to the mosque and found Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) leading the people in prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to him, "Stay in your place." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then sat beside Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sayyiduna as-Siddiq al-Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) would follow the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the people would follow the prayer of Sayyiduna as-Siddiq al-Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him).
