Hadith 295
It is narrated from Hazrat Mihjan bin Abi Mihjan that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when the call to prayer was given. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up, performed the prayer, and returned to find Mihjan still sitting there. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Why did you not pray with the people? Are you not a Muslim?" Mihjan replied, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Of course I am, but I had already performed the prayer at home." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When you come to the mosque, pray with the people, even if you have already performed the prayer before."
Hadith 296
It is narrated from Nafi that a man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "I perform prayer at home, then I find the congregation with the Imam; should I then pray again with the Imam?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Yes." The man asked: "Then, out of the two prayers, which one should I consider as obligatory and which as supererogatory (nafl)?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: "What concern is that of yours? That is up to Allah, the Glorious and Exalted; He may make whichever He wills obligatory and whichever He wills supererogatory."
Hadith 297
Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated that a man asked Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him): "I perform prayer in my house, then I come to the mosque and find the imam praying. Should I pray with him again?" Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Yes." The man then asked: "Which of the two prayers should I consider as obligatory?" Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Can you distinguish between obligatory and supererogatory prayers? This matter belongs to Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He."
Hadith 298
It is narrated from a person who was from the tribe of Banu Asad that he asked Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): "I perform prayer in my house, then I come to the mosque and find the Imam leading the prayer. Should I then pray again with the Imam?" Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes! Whoever does so will receive the reward of congregation, or a reward like that of congregation, or he will receive a portion of the reward of the army of Islam, meaning he will receive the reward of a warrior, or he will receive the reward of staying in Muzdalifah, or he will receive double reward—one for praying alone and the other for praying with the congregation."
Hadith 299
It is narrated from Nafi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say that whoever has performed the Maghrib or Fajr prayer, and then finds the congregation for these two prayers, should not repeat them.
Hadith 299B
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: If a person performs the prayer alone and then finds the prayer being performed with the Imam, there is no harm in performing it again, except for the Maghrib prayer, because if it is performed again, it will not remain odd, rather three will become two units.
