بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْعَتَمَةِ وَالصُّبْحِ
Chapter on what is reported regarding the night and morning prayers
Hadith 291
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ شُهُودُ الْعِشَاءِ وَالصُّبْحِ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَهُمَا " أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذَا
It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The difference between us and the hypocrites is that they cannot attend the congregational prayers of Fajr and Isha." Or he said something similar to this.
Hadith 292
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ سُمَيٍّ مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي بِطَرِيقٍ إِذْ وَجَدَ غُصْنَ شَوْكٍ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ ، فَأَخَّرَهُ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ " . وَقَالَ: " الشُّهَدَاءُ خَمْسَةٌ: الْمَطْعُونُ وَالْمَبْطُونُ وَالْغَرِقُ وَصَاحِبُ الْهَدْمِ وَالشَّهِيدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ " . وَقَالَ: " لَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ مَا فِي النِّدَاءِ وَالصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَجِدُوا إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَهِمُوا عَلَيْهِ لَاسْتَهَمُوا ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي التَّهْجِيرِ لَاسْتَبَقُوا إِلَيْهِ ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي الْعَتَمَةِ وَالصُّبْحِ لَأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A man was walking and found a thorn on the road, so he removed it; thus Allah became pleased with him and forgave him." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There are five types of martyrs: one who dies of plague (an abscess in the armpit), or dies of diarrhea, or dies by drowning, or dies by falling from a building, or is martyred in the way of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He." And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: "If people knew the reward that is in the call to prayer and the first row, and then could not find any way except to draw lots for it, they would surely draw lots for it. And if people knew the reward for performing prayer at its earliest time, they would surely hasten to it. And if they knew what reward there is for attending the congregational prayers of Isha and Fajr, they would surely come to them even if they had to crawl on their knees and elbows."
Hadith 293
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَدَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ فِي صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ ، وَأَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ غَدَا إلَى السُّوقِ ، وَمَسْكَنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بَيْنَ السُّوقِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ النَّبَوِيِّ فَمَرَّ عَلَى الشِّفَاءِ أُمِّ سُلَيْمَانَ ، فَقَالَ لَهَا : " لَمْ أَرَ سُلَيْمَانَ فِي الصُّبْحِ " ، فَقَالَتْ : إِنَّهُ بَاتَ يُصَلِّي فَغَلَبَتْهُ عَيْنَاهُ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : " لَأَنْ أَشْهَدَ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ فِي الْجَمَاعَةِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُومَ لَيْلَةً "
It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Sulaiman bin Abi Hathma that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, did not find Sulaiman bin Abi Hathma in the morning prayer. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, went to the market, and Sulaiman's house was between the market and the mosque. He met Sulaiman's mother, Shifa, so Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said to Shifa, "I did not see Sulaiman in the morning prayer?" Shifa said, "He was praying at night, so he fell asleep." Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "Indeed, for me to be present at the morning prayer is more beloved than worshipping at night."
Hadith 294
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ فَرَأَى أَهْلَ الْمَسْجِدِ قَلِيلًا ، فَاضْطَجَعَ فِي مُؤَخَّرِ الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَكْثُرُوا ، فَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ فَسَأَلَهُ مَنْ هُوَ ؟ فَأَخْبَرَهُ ، فَقَالَ : مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ؟ فَأَخْبَرَهُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ : " مَنْ شَهِدَ الْعِشَاءَ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَامَ نِصْفَ لَيْلَةٍ ، وَمَنْ شَهِدَ الصُّبْحَ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَامَ لَيْلَةً "
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abi Amrah Ansari that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the mosque for the Isha prayer and saw that there were few people, so he lay down at the back of the mosque waiting for people to gather so that their number would increase. Then Ibn Abi Amrah came and sat with Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Who are you?" Ibn Abi Amrah told him his name, so Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "How much of the Qur'an have you memorized?" Ibn Abi Amrah informed him, then Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Whoever is present at the Isha prayer, it is as if he has worshipped for half the night, and whoever is present at the congregation of the morning prayer, it is as if he has worshipped the whole night."
