Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I lay down across the width of the bed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his wife lay along its length. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until, when half the night had passed, or a little before or a little after, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. He sat up and began to rub his eyes with his hand, then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran, that is, from «﴿إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ﴾» to the end of the surah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a water-skin that was hanging and performed ablution from it thoroughly, then stood up and began to pray. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I also stood up and did as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had done. When I came to him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand on my head and took hold of my right ear and began to twist it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then prayed witr, then lay down. When the mu’adhdhin came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two light rak‘ahs, then went out and led the morning prayer.
