بَابُ النَّظَرِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ إِلَى مَا يَشْغَلُكَ عَنْهَا
Chapter on Looking at What Distracts You in Prayer
Hadith 217
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَتْ : أَهْدَى أَبُو جَهْمِ بْنُ حُذَيْفَةَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَمِيصَةً شَامِيَّةً لَهَا عَلَمٌ ، فَشَهِدَ فِيهَا الصَّلَاةَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ، قَالَ : " رُدِّي هَذِهِ الْخَمِيصَةَ إِلَى أبِي جَهْمٍ فَإِنِّي نَظَرْتُ إِلَى عَلَمِهَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَكَادَ يَفْتِنُنِي "
It is narrated from Sayyida Marjana (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna Abu Juhm bin Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a Syrian cloak as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which had designs (i.e., patterns and decorations) on it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it and came to pray. When he finished the prayer, he said: "Return this cloak to Abu Juhm, for I saw its patterns during the prayer, and I was close to becoming distracted."
Hadith 218
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، مَالِك ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَبِسَ خَمِيصَةً لَهَا عَلَمٌ ، ثُمَّ أَعْطَاهَا أَبَا جَهْمٍ وَأَخَذَ مِنْ أَبِي جَهْمٍ أَنْبِجَانِيَّةً لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَلِمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي نَظَرْتُ إِلَى عَلَمِهَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wore a patterned cloak made in Syria, then he gave that cloak to Abu Juham and took from him a thick plain cloak. So Abu Juham said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Why did you do this? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I looked at its patterns during the prayer."
Hadith 219
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، مَالِك ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَا طَلْحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي حَائِطِهِ ، فَطَارَ دُبْسِيٌّ فَطَفِقَ يَتَرَدَّدُ يَلْتَمِسُ مَخْرَجًا ، فَأَعْجَبَهُ ذَلِكَ فَجَعَلَ يُتْبِعُهُ بَصَرَهُ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى صَلَاتِهِ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ لَا يَدْرِي كَمْ صَلَّى ، فَقَالَ : " لَقَدْ أَصَابَتْنِي فِي مَالِي هَذَا فِتْنَةٌ فَجَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ الَّذِي أَصَابَهُ فِي حَائِطِهِ مِنَ الْفِتْنَةِ ، وَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هُوَ صَدَقَةٌ لِلَّهِ فَضَعْهُ حَيْثُ شِئْتَ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, that Sayyiduna Abu Talha Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, was praying in his garden when a bird flew in and began searching for a way out of the garden, because the garden was so dense and the trees were so closely joined together that the bird could not find a way to escape. This sight pleased him greatly, and seeing the state of his garden, he became very happy, so he kept looking at it for a while. Then he remembered his prayer and forgot how many rak‘ahs he had performed. At that moment, he said that Allah Almighty has tested me with this wealth. So he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and related the entire incident that had happened in the garden, and said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! I give this garden as charity for the sake of Allah, the Lord of Might and Majesty, so spend it wherever you wish.
Hadith 220
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي حَائِطٍ لَهُ بِالْقُفِّ وَادٍ مِنْ أَوْدِيَةِ الْمَدِينَةِ فِي زَمَانِ الثَّمَرِ وَالنَّخْلُ قَدْ ذُلِّلَتْ ، فَهِيَ مُطَوَّقَةٌ بِثَمَرِهَا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا ، فَأَعْجَبَهُ مَا رَأَى مِنْ ثَمَرِهَا ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى صَلَاتِهِ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ لَا يَدْرِي كَمْ صَلَّى ، فَقَالَ : لَقَدْ أَصَابَتْنِي فِي مَالِي هَذَا فِتْنَةٌ فَجَاءَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَلِيفَةٌ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ، وَقَالَ : " هُوَ صَدَقَةٌ ، فَاجْعَلْهُ فِي سُبُلِ الْخَيْرِ " فَبَاعَهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ بِخَمْسِينَ أَلْفًا فَسُمِّيَ ذَلِكَ الْمَالُ الْخَمْسِينَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man from among the Ansar was performing prayer in his garden, and that garden was in Qaf, which is the name of a valley among the valleys of Madinah, during a season when the dates were ripe and hanging, as if the clusters of fruit were placed in the necklaces of the branches. So he looked towards them during the prayer and greatly admired the fruits. Then, when he thought about his prayer, he forgot how many rak‘ahs he had performed. So he said, "I have been tested by Allah, the Lord of Might and Majesty, in this wealth." Then he came to Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, who was the Caliph in those days (of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him), and related this story to him. Then he said, "Now this (garden) is charity, so spend it in good works." So Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, sold it for fifty thousand, and this wealth became known as 'Fifty Thousand.'
