بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ
What is reported about wiping over leather socks
Hadith 70
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَهَبَ لِحَاجَتِهِ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ . قَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ : فَذَهَبْتُ مَعَهُ بِمَاءٍ ، فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَكَبْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ " فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ يُخْرِجُ يَدَيْهِ مِنْ كُمَّيْ جُبَّتِهِ فَلَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ مِنْ ضِيقِ كُمَّيِ الْجُبَّةِ ، فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِنْ تَحْتِ الْجُبَّةِ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " . فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ يَؤُمُّهُمْ وَقَدْ صَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَةً ، فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الرَّكْعَةَ الَّتِي بَقِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَفَزِعَ النَّاسُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " أَحْسَنْتُمْ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself during the Battle of Tabuk, so I took water along with me. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned after relieving himself, I poured water and he washed his face. Then he began to take out his hands from the sleeves of his cloak, but they were so tight that his hands could not come out. Finally, he took his hands out from beneath the cloak and washed his hands and wiped his head and his leather socks. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer and one rak‘ah had already been performed. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the remaining rak‘ah behind Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people became anxious. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he said: “You did well.”
Hadith 71
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، أَنَّهُمَا أَخْبَرَاهُ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ قَدِمَ الْكُوفَةَ عَلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ وَهُوَ أَمِيرُهَا فَرَآهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ . فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ سَعْدٌ : سَلْ أَبَاكَ إِذَا قَدِمْتَ عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَدِمَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَنَسِيَ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ عُمَرَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ سَعْدٌ ، فَقَالَ : أَسَأَلْتَ أَبَاكَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا ، فَسَأَلَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : " إِذَا أَدْخَلْتَ رِجْلَيْكَ فِي الْخُفَّيْنِ وَهُمَا طَاهِرَتَانِ فَامْسَحْ عَلَيْهِمَا " ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : وَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدُنَا مِنَ الْغَائِطِ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : " نَعَمْ ، وَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنَ الْغَائِطِ "
It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi’ and Hazrat Abdullah bin Dinar that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) came to Kufa to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was the governor of Kufa. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him wiping over his leather socks, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) objected to this action. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Ask your father when you go back. So when Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he forgot to ask his father, until Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: Did you ask your father? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, so Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you put your feet into your leather socks and your feet are clean, then wipe over the leather socks. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Even if we come after relieving ourselves? He said: Yes! Even if any of you comes after relieving himself.
Hadith 72
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ " بَالَ فِي السُّوقِ ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ، ثُمَّ دُعِيَ لِجَنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا حِينَ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا "
It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) urinated in the market, then performed ablution and washed his face and hands, and wiped over his head. Then he was called for the funeral prayer. When he had gone to the mosque, he wiped over his socks, then performed the funeral prayer.
Hadith 73
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رُقَيْشٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ أَتَى قُبَا فَبَالَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ، وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ ، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَصَلَّى " . ¤ قَالَ يَحْيَى : وَسُئِلَ مَالِك ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَ الصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ لَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ بَالَ ثُمَّ نَزَعَهُمَا ثُمَّ رَدَّهُمَا فِي رِجْلَيْهِ أَيَسْتَأْنِفُ الْوُضُوءَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لِيَنْزِعْ خُفَّيْهِ وَلْيَغْسِلْ رِجْلَيْهِ ، وَإِنَّمَا يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ مَنْ أَدْخَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ فِي الْخُفَّيْنِ وَهُمَا طَاهِرَتَانِ بِطُهْرِ الْوُضُوءِ ، وَأَمَّا مَنْ أَدْخَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ فِي الْخُفَّيْنِ وَهُمَا غَيْرُ طَاهِرَتَيْنِ بِطُهْرِ الْوُضُوءِ فَلَا يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ . ¤ قَالَ : وَسُئِلَ مَالِك ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ تَوَضَّأَ وَعَلَيْهِ خُفَّاهُ فَسَهَا عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ حَتَّى جَفَّ وَضُوءُهُ وَصَلَّى ، قَالَ : لِيَمْسَحْ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ وَلْيُعِدِ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَا يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ ، وَسُئِلَ مَالِك ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ غَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ لَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْنَفَ الْوُضُوءَ ، فَقَالَ : لِيَنْزِعْ خُفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ لِيَتَوَضَّأْ وَلْيَغْسِلْ رِجْلَيْهِ
Hazrat Saeed bin Abdur Rahman saw Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he came to Quba and urinated, then water for ablution was brought, so he performed ablution, washed his face and both hands up to the elbows, wiped his head, and wiped over his socks, then came to the mosque and offered prayer.
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a person who performed ablution for prayer, then wore both socks, then urinated, then took off the socks and wore them again, should he perform ablution again? Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that he should take off the socks, perform ablution, and wash his feet, and only that person should wipe over the socks who wore the socks while his feet were pure from ablution. But the one who wore the socks while his feet were not pure from ablution should not wipe over the socks.
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a person who performed ablution and was wearing socks but forgot to wipe over the socks until his ablution dried and he offered prayer. He replied that the person should wipe over the socks and repeat the prayer, but repeating the ablution is not necessary.
