بَابُ جَامِعِ السَّعْيِComprehensive Chapter on Sa'i
Hadith 829
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، وَأَنَا يَوْمَئِذٍ حَدِيثُ السِّنِّ ، أَرَأَيْتِ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى : إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا سورة البقرة آية 158 فَمَا عَلَى الرَّجُلِ شَيْءٌ أَنْ لَا يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : " كَلَّا لَوْ كَانَ كَمَا تَقُولُ لَكَانَتْ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ ، أَنْ لَا يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ، إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِي الْأَنْصَارِ ، كَانُوا يُهِلُّونَ لِمَنَاةَ ، وَكَانَتْ مَنَاةُ حَذْوَ قُدَيْدٍ وَكَانُوا يَتَحَرَّجُونَ ، أَنْ يَطُوفُوا بَيْنَ الصَّفَا ، وَالْمَرْوَةِ ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الْإِسْلَامُ سَأَلُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى : إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا سورة البقرة آية 158 "
Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair said: I asked Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Look, Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, says: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or ‘Umrah, there is no sin upon him in walking between them.” From this it seems that if one does not perform Sa’i, there is no harm. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Never so! If it were as you think (i.e., that not performing Sa’i would not be wrong), then Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, would have said: There is sin upon him in not performing Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. And this verse was revealed regarding the Ansar; they used to perform Hajj for Manat (Manat is the name of an idol which the Arabs used to worship before Islam), and Manat was opposite Qudayd (Qudayd is the name of a village between Makkah and Madinah, and Manat was in front of it). They used to consider it wrong to perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. When they embraced Islam, they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so at that time Allah, Glorious is His Majesty, revealed: “Safa and Marwah are both among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or ‘Umrah, there is no sin upon him in walking between them.”
