Abdullah bin Rafi’, who was the freed slave of the wife of the Messenger of Allah, Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), asked Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the time of prayer. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I tell you? Pray Zuhr when your shadow becomes equal to you, and ‘Asr when your shadow becomes twice your height, and Maghrib when the sun sets, and ‘Isha at one-third of the night, and Fajr in the darkness of the dawn.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abu Samee'ah
Benefit:
The Hanafis become very pleased upon seeing the phrase “two shadows” (do misal) in this fatwa of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu regarding the Asr prayer, and they present it as evidence, whereas:
➊ There is no word in this fatwa that indicates that the time for the Asr prayer begins only at two shadows.
➋ Why, in this fatwa, is the command to perform the Zuhr prayer at one shadow then abandoned? Will any Hanafi use this as evidence that the time for Zuhr begins at one shadow?
➌ Why do the Hanafis turn away from the command in this fatwa to perform the Fajr prayer in darkness?
➍ In [نسائي، حديث: 503، سند صحيح هے], Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu himself has narrated from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam the timings of the prayers, in which it is mentioned that Jibril alayhis salam performed Zuhr on the first day immediately after the sun had declined, and performed Asr at one shadow, and then on the second day performed Zuhr at one shadow and Asr at two shadows.
