Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abu Samee'ah
Benefit: Based on this narration, according to the verifying scholars, it is permissible to take separate water for wiping (masah) the ears. The narration from Bayhaqi and Hakim that is presented regarding this from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is present in Sahih Muslim with this chain [حديث: 238], and in it, there is mention of taking fresh water for the head, not for the ears. For this reason, the hadith scholars have considered the narration of Bayhaqi and Hakim to be irregular (shadh). In any case, not taking fresh water for the ears is better and more virtuous, and taking it is only permissible, because it has not been established from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he took separate water for the ears. Rather, as has already been made clear from [موطا كي روايت: 59], the ears are in fact a part of the head; therefore, the water used for the head is sufficient for the ears.
