Hadith 63

It is narrated from Yahya bin Saeed that Saeed bin Musayyib was asked about taking water after defecation, so he said that this is the purification of women.

Benefit:
There are two possible meanings to this answer. First, that generally women use water for istinja (purification after relieving oneself), whereas it is common practice among men to use clods of earth. The second meaning is that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib rahimahullah also considered it blameworthy and disliked for men to perform istinja with water, as this same view is also reported from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, Ibn 'Umar, and Ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhum. However, Imam Malik rahimahullah and the majority of jurists from all schools of thought are unanimous that performing istinja with water is not only permissible but also superior, because this practice is established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in numerous hadiths.
