It is narrated from Hazrat Humran, who was (a freed slave) of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on the platform when the muezzin came and informed about the Asr prayer. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for water and performed ablution, then said: "By Allah! I am narrating to you a hadith, if that hadith were not in the Book of Allah, I would not narrate it. I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he used to say: 'There is no person who performs ablution well and then offers prayer, except that the sins between that prayer and the next prayer will be forgiven for him, until he offers the next prayer.'"
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said that perhaps Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) meant this verse: «﴿وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ ذَلِكَ ذِكْرَى لِلذَّاكِرِينَ﴾».
