بَابُ غُسْلِ الْمَيِّتِChapter on washing the deceased
Hadith 520
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ السَّخْتِيَانِيِّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ ، قَالَتْ : دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ، إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي " ، قَالَتْ : فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حِقْوَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ " تَعْنِي بِحِقْوِهِ إِزَارَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us and said: “Give her a bath three times, or five times, or more than that, with water and lotus leaves, and in the last (washing) add camphor. And when you have finished bathing her, inform me.” Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When we finished bathing her, we informed him, so he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave his lower garment and said: “Wrap her body in this.”
