بَابُ الِالْتِفَاتِ وَالتَّصْفِيقِ عِنْدَ الْحَاجَةِ فِي الصَّلَاةِChapter on Turning and Clapping When Needed in Prayer
Hadith 392
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَهَبَ إِلَى بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ لِيُصْلِحَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَحَانَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَجَاءَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ ، فَقَالَ : أَتُصَلِّي لِلنَّاسِ فَأُقِيمَ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالنَّاسُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، فَتَخَلَّصَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ فِي الصَّفِّ فَصَفَّقَ النَّاسُ ، وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرَ النَّاسُ مِنَ التَّصْفِيقِ ، الْتَفَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَرَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنِ امْكُثْ مَكَانَكَ فَرَفَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَدَيْهِ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا أَمَرَهُ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْخَرَ حَتَّى اسْتَوَى فِي الصَّفِّ ، وَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَثْبُتَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ " ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : مَا كَانَ لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا لِي رَأَيْتُكُمْ أَكْثَرْتُمْ مِنَ التَّصْفِيحِ ، مَنْ نَابَهُ شَيْءٌ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيُسَبِّحْ ، فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا سَبَّحَ الْتُفِتَ إِلَيْهِ وَإِنَّمَا التَّصْفِيحُ لِلنِّسَاءِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to the people of Banu Amr bin Awf to make peace among them, and the time for prayer came. The mu’adhdhin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “If you will lead the prayer, I will say the takbir?” He said: “Alright.” So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived while the people were praying. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way through the rows until he stood in the first row. The people started clapping. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not pay attention to anything during the prayer, until the people started clapping loudly. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and intended to step back. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured: “Stay in your place.” So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised both his hands and thanked Allah for the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he should remain as imam. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward and completed the prayer. Then he said: “O Abu Bakr! Why did you not remain in your place when I gestured to you?” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “It does not befit the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: “Why did you clap so much? If something happens to someone in the prayer, he should say ‘Subhan Allah’; the people will look towards him. And clapping is for women.”
