بَابُ وُضُوءِ النَّائِمِ إِذَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِChapter on ablution for one who wakes up for prayer
Hadith 38
اُردوEn
قَالَ يَحْيَى : قَالَ مَالِك : الْأَمْرُ عِنْدَنَا أَنَّهُ لَا يَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ رُعَافٍ ، وَلَا مِنْ دَمٍ ، وَلَا مِنْ قَيْحٍ يَسِيلُ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ ، وَلَا يَتَوَضَّأُ إِلَّا مِنْ حَدَثٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ ، أَوْ دُبُرٍ أَوْ نَوْمٍ
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In our view, nosebleed, blood flowing, or pus oozing does not necessitate ablution; rather, one should not perform ablution except due to impurity that comes out from the anus or the penis, or if one sleeps.
وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، " أَنَّ تَفْسِيرَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ : يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ سورة المائدة آية 6 : أَنَّ ذَلِكَ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ مِنَ الْمَضَاجِعِ ، يَعْنِي النَّوْمَ "
Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam said that what Allah, Glorious and Exalted, has said: "When you rise for prayer, then wash your face, and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles." The purpose of this is that when you rise for prayer after sleeping.

... This interpretation by Zayd ibn Aslam rahimahullah is only from one aspect, whereas, considering all the Shari'ah evidences, the majority of exegetes (mufassirun) explain its meaning as follows:
«إِذَا أَرَدْتُمُ الْقِيَامَ مُحْدِتين»
"That is, when you are without ablution (wudu) and intend to stand for prayer, then perform ablution."
In any case, Imam Malik rahimahullah is also establishing from this narration that sleep invalidates ablution.
