Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abu Samee'ah
Benefit:
Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that «إِنَّرَسُولَاللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهٰىعَنِالسَّدْلِفِيالصَّلَاةِوَأَنْيُغَطِيَالرَّجُلُفَاهُ» “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade letting the garment hang down in prayer and forbade that a person cover his mouth.” [ابو داؤد: 643، اس كي سند حسن هے]
This covering, whether with the hand or with a garment, is prohibited in both forms, because if the mouth is covered with the hand, it necessitates abandoning the Sunnah of the Prophet regarding the placement of the hands in prayer, and if the mouth is covered with a garment, it results in resemblance to the Magians, who cover their mouths during worship. However, if one yawns, then covering the mouth with the hand is an exception. [صحيح مسلم: 2995]
