Hadith 25

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam that during the night, on the way to Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stopped and appointed Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to wake them up for prayer. But Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) fell asleep, and the people also slept. Then they woke up and the sun had risen, and the people became anxious (because the prayer had been missed). So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered them to mount so that they could leave that valley, and said: "There is a devil in this valley." So they mounted and left that valley. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered them to dismount and perform ablution, and ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the adhan or the takbir. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led the prayer with all the people. Then he turned towards the people and saw their anxiety, so he said: "O people! Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has taken hold of our souls, and if He had willed, He would have returned our souls at another time besides this. So, when any of you sleeps through the prayer or forgets it, then when he wakes up anxiously for the prayer, he should pray it as he would pray it at its time." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Satan came to Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was standing and praying, and made him lie down, then began to pat him as a child is patted, until he fell asleep." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) described his condition just as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness to this matter that you (peace be upon him) are the Messenger of Allah.

Benefit:

This was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that, before Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) informed him, he described the situation exactly as it had occurred. This is evidence that the One above the Throne informed him of it through revelation. Such incidents are counted among the signs of prophethood. Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) already had complete certainty in the prophethood of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from much earlier, but upon witnessing this fresh miracle, he once again bore witness to the prophethood so that his faith would increase further in strength and freshness.

The opening words of this blessed hadith make it clear that this incident occurred on the way to Makkah, which proves that this hadith and the previous hadith pertain to separate incidents, because Makkah and Khaybar are located in completely different directions from Madinah. Thus, Makkah is to the south of Madinah, while Khaybar is to the north.

The third incident was narrated by Imran ibn Husayn (radi Allahu anhuma). [بخاري: 344، مسلم: 682] According to this narration, the entire army slept through, and in this incident Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) were also present. Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was the first to wake up, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was the fourth to wake up, and he woke the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) by loudly proclaiming the takbir. An important proof that this is a separate incident, according to the narration of Tabarani, is that in it, the responsibility of waking up was assigned to two informants (radi Allahu anhu).

The fourth incident was narrated by Abu Qatadah (radi Allahu anhu). [بخاري: 595، 7471، مسلم: 681] On this occasion, only seven people missed the prayer, among whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the first to wake up. Also, Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) were not among them.

From some indications, it appears that these last two incidents occurred during the same journey, but the specific journey is not transmitted; it is possible that it was the expedition of Tabuk.
