بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي قِيَامِ رَمَضَانَChapter on what is reported regarding standing in Ramadan
Hadith 248
حَدَّثَنِي حَدَّثَنِي مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : خَرَجْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي رَمَضَانَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِذَا النَّاسُ أَوْزَاعٌ مُتَفَرِّقُونَ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ لِنَفْسِهِ وَيُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ فَيُصَلِّي بِصَلَاتِهِ الرَّهْطُ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : " وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَرَانِي لَوْ جَمَعْتُ هَؤُلَاءِ عَلَى قَارِئٍ وَاحِدٍ ، لَكَانَ أَمْثَلَ " فَجَمَعَهُمْ عَلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ لَيْلَةً أُخْرَى وَالنَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ قَارِئِهِمْ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : " نِعْمَتِ الْبِدْعَةُ هَذِهِ وَالَّتِي تَنَامُونَ عَنْهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي تَقُومُونَ " يَعْنِي آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ وَكَانَ النَّاسُ يَقُومُونَ أَوَّلَهُ
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abdul Qari that I went out with Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to the mosque in Ramadan and saw that the people were separated and scattered. Some were praying with eight or ten men behind one person. So Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! I think it would be better if I gathered them all behind one reciter. Then he gathered them all behind Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdur Rahman says that then I came with them the next night and saw that all the people were praying behind Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is a good innovation, and the time when you sleep (i.e., the latter part of the night) is better than the time when you are praying, meaning the early part of the night. And the people used to stand in prayer in the early part of the night.
