Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abu Samee'ah
Statement of the Interpretations Regarding «دُلُوكِ شمس» (Declining of the Sun) and «غَسَقُاللَّيْل» (Darkness of the Night):
Benefit:
In this chapter, Imam Malik rahimahullah mentions some interpretive statements regarding the blessed verse in which, with great brevity and comprehensiveness, there is an indication towards the times of prayer. The verse is:
“Establish prayer from the declining of the sun until the darkness of the night, and [also] the recitation of dawn (fajr).”
In this blessed verse, “from the declining of the sun until the darkness of the night” is an indication and collective mention of four prayers, because except for Fajr, the times of the remaining four prayers are connected to each other: as soon as the time of one prayer ends, the time of the next begins, and this sequence continues until the middle of the night. And since the time of Fajr prayer is not connected to any other prayer, neither before nor after, Allah Ta’ala mentioned it separately. Furthermore, since this prayer is distinguished by its lengthy recitation, its very name was given as “Qur’an” (meaning recitation), and instead of saying «صلاة الفجر», it was mentioned by the name «قرآن الفجر».
