بَابُ افْتِتَاحِ الصَّلَاةِOpening of the prayer
Hadith 168

وَحَدَّثَنِي ، عَنْ مَالِك ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " إِذَا أَدْرَكَ الرَّجُلُ الرَّكْعَةَ فَكَبَّرَ تَكْبِيرَةً وَاحِدَةً ، أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ تِلْكَ التَّكْبِيرَةُ " .
Ibn Shihab used to say that when a person catches the bowing (ruku) and says the takbir, then this takbir will suffice for the opening takbir (takbir al-tahrima).
قَالَ مَالِك : وَذَلِكَ إِذَا نَوَى بِتِلْكَ التَّكْبِيرَةِ افْتِتَاحَ الصَّلَاةِ .
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: In our view, it is sufficient that with this takbir, one intends the Takbir al-Tahrimah.
وَسُئِلَ مَالِك ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ دَخَلَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَنَسِيَ تَكْبِيرَةَ الْافْتِتَاحِ وَتَكْبِيرَةَ الرُّكُوعِ حَتَّى صَلَّى رَكْعَةً ، ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ كَبَّرَ تَكْبِيرَةَ الْافْتِتَاحِ ، وَلَا عِنْدَ الرُّكُوعِ ، وَكَبَّرَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ، قَالَ : يَبْتَدِئُ صَلَاتَهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ وَلَوْ سَهَا مَعَ الْإِمَامِ عَنْ تَكْبِيرَةِ الْافْتِتَاحِ ، وَكَبَّرَ فِي الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ رَأَيْتُ ذَلِكَ مُجْزِيًا عَنْهُ إِذَا نَوَى بِهَا تَكْبِيرَةَ الْافْتِتَاحِ .
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about a person who joined the prayer with the Imam and forgot the Takbir al-Tahrimah and the Takbir for bowing, until he completed one rak'ah, then remembered that he had not said the Takbir al-Tahrimah, nor the Takbir at the time of bowing, but said the Takbir in the second rak'ah. Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, replied that it is better for him to repeat the prayer from the beginning. And as for the one who forgot to say the Takbir al-Tahrimah with the Imam but said the Takbir al-Tahrimah at the time of bowing, then this Takbir will suffice for the Takbir al-Tahrimah, provided that he intended with this Takbir the Takbir al-Tahrimah.
وَقَالَ مَالِك فِي إِمَامٍ يَنْسَى تَكْبِيرَةَ الْافْتِتَاحِ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ ، قَالَ : أَرَى أَنْ يُعِيدَ وَيُعِيدُ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ الصَّلَاةَ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ قَدْ كَبَّرُوا ، فَإِنَّهُمْ يُعِيدُونَ
And Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that if the Imam forgets the Takbir al-Tahrimah and completes the prayer, then he should repeat it, and those who prayed behind him should also repeat the prayer, even if they themselves had said the Takbir al-Tahrimah.
قَالَ مَالِك فِي الَّذِي يُصَلِّي لِنَفْسِهِ فَنَسِيَ تَكْبِيرَةَ الْافْتِتَاحِ : إِنَّهُ يَسْتَأْنِفُ صَلَاتَهُ .
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that if a person prays alone and forgets the Takbir al-Tahrimah, then he should perform the prayer again from the beginning.
