It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b Qurazi that Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan said from the pulpit: O people! What Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, gives, no one can withhold, and what He does not give, no one can give, and the power of any powerful person is of no use (that is, his power cannot avert His punishment or his wealth cannot benefit him, only deeds will be of use). Whomever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding in religion, and grants him the knowledge of jurisprudence. Then Muawiyah said: I heard these words from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on these wooden planks (the noble pulpit).
